DESIGN III
Fall 2020
AUSTIN, TX
with Daniel Clenney
Based on an architect that classmates had thoroughly researched in a preceding project, partners were tasked with projecting that architect’s techniques and style to create a community center at a site on Lake Austin Boulevard.  Inspired by Kengo Kuma’s use of repeated individual components and style of shifted volumes, we created a multi-level community structure where the scale of the masonry size unit corresponds to the degree of publicity of space behind it.  This construction technique also allowed us to create built-in forms by extending the screen-like wall forms into more solid masses that became seats and tables.  The ground level and roof level are intended for larger gatherings, such as a farmers’ market, community play, or children’s concert while the middle levels are reserved for smaller gatherings - such as scouts - or private reading/studying.
